Looking and smelling like a homeless person, Maurine was escorted into the room by a Mossad woman and told to sit at the table. The stark white room was without windows, and the lights were bright. She sat and cupped her hands together, attempting to hide her chipped and broken fingernails. Hearing the sound of the door opening behind her, she unconsciously reached up and attempted to smooth down her dirty, matted hair.

He sat across from her and looked into her bloodshot eyes. The routine was always the same but at irregular intervals around the clock. All concept of time—whether it was day or night—escaped her.

For over an hour, Chief Thaddeus Nussbaum of Mossad Station, Panama questioned Maurine. So far, she had been consistent in sticking to her story that she didn’t know what Madison was doing or where he was working. However, she was weakening.

Thaddeus leaned back and said in a harsh tone, “You stink and are filthy. Do you like what you see when you look into the mirror?” He slid a mirror across the table to her, then withdrew a toothbrush and tube of toothpaste from his pocket and laid them on the table between them. Without uttering a sound, he pulled out a bar of soap and placed it on the table too. Then he produced a small bottle of cologne, opened it, and sniffed the light, fresh floral scent, letting the fragrance flood her nostrils. Then he replaced the cap and placed it beside the other items.

Her eyes revealed exactly what he’d anticipated. She could smell the clean, fresh soap. Without even a conscious thought, her hand rose from below the table and inched toward the toiletries. Already dreaming of the cool water carrying the rich lather cascading over her bare skin, she was stunned when she felt his hand come down on top of hers. She heard his words, snapping her out of the reverie.

“You will have to earn them. Answers first. You cooperate, then you can have them. Do you understand?” he said, his tone serious.

Maurine locked eyes with him. She couldn’t remember ever being this dirty. Madison had schooled her well, but she was no professional intelligence or military person. She was never, under any circumstances, to tell anyone what he did or where he was if he wasn’t with her. She had been around and knew how to play the game with the authorities. However, the Israelis were not like the local police she was accustomed to being rousted by. These people control every minute of my life, she thought, looking down at the toiletries again. I don’t know what they know or have tricked me into revealing. They could make me disappear and no one would ever know. Aside from her fear of her captives, her vanity was getting the better of her. She thought, I could tell them just a few things but not everything. The insignificant ones. Then a shower and clean up.
